Why choose Us

The Usual Statistician

1) If a little is good, more must be better!

Most of the other statisticians in this space seem to follow this dictum.

We humans have a general tendency that more is always better. Having one bite of chocolate isn't good enough, so we ask for another!

But statistics is one of those fields where it is probably not correct.

Some of the statisticians send their clients massive data dumps consisting of thousands of graphs and tables. They typically use software programs to compute EVERY RELATIONSHIP between EVERY SINGLE variable.

For the student, it feels more like “Garbage In, Garbage Out.”

Most of the statistics that they send, are completely useless. Instead of helping a student solve their problem, they compound it by adding to their confusion!

It is like trying to find a needle in the haystack.

2) Pay upfront .. or else buzz off

Till the late 1800s, the British were sending off most of their prisoners to the newly formed colony of Australia. However, only half of the convicts managed to even set foot on the island. Most of them didn’t even survive the 8 month long arduous journey.

Then, in 1862, a slight change was made. And the survival shot up from 50% to nearly 100%.

What was this miracle, you ask?

Earlier, the captains of the ships were compensated for each prisoner that boarded the ship in Britain. No consideration was given to how many made it alive. As a result, the prisoners were kept in horrible conditions and spent most of the journey literally starving.

When the compensation pattern shifted to the number of prisoners getting off the ship in Australia, the overall health of the prisoners improved.

Most of the statisticians demand upfront payment in full. While there is nothing wrong with this approach, they will inevitably end up taking up more business than they can handle. I have heard countless horror stories from students where the statisticians took the money claiming to deliver results in 5 days, but ended up taking up 15 days.

What sets Us apart?

We are ardent follower of Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger and our approach in life reflects that.

Our philosophy is based on the following simple principles

1) To get what you want, you have to deserve what you want. The world is not yet a crazy enough place to reward a whole bunch of undeserving people.

– Munger

2) When you go out in the world, look for the job you would take if you didn’t need the money.

– Buffett

1) Quality over Quantity

Unlike the cocktail of chemotherapy that indiscriminately kills friend as well as foe, we provide targeted therapy – specific tests to answer very precise questions.

We usually start by spending some time with the students trying to understand

  • What is the thesis about?

  • What are they trying to prove?

  • What are the objectives?

  • What tests would be needed to prove it?

After gaining a basic understanding, we frame a set of questions which are then answered methodically using statistics involving only the relevant variables.

We do not send useless graphs or tables just to increase the size of the document.

2) Pay only when most of the work is done

Most other people in this space are NOT medicos. Being Doctors ourselves, we have complete faith and trust in our fellow doctors. Therefore, we never ask for advance payment; rather we let our work speak for itself.

We do not ask for any advance payment. We ask for payment only when we consider that a majority of the work has been completed and only minor corrections need to be made.

This leads to 2 wonderful things

  1. Our incentives are aligned in such a way that we have to finish the work as fast as possible. Else we will also not get paid.

  2. If we already have too much on my plate, we politely refuse any potential students. This makes us highly reliable – if we say we will do something in 1 week, you can be sure we will do it in a week.
